A new unit is a planned purchase for most households, and water heater financing is available if you would rather spread the cost. We install both gas and electric water heaters, and the right answer usually follows what is already at the unit. Gas installation means the flue, combustion air and gas connection have to meet current code — often the part of the job that adds cost on an older house. Electric installation skips venting entirely but needs a dedicated 240-volt circuit sized to the unit. Add-ons are priced in addition to the replacement: haul away $95, permit $295 administrative fee plus the city’s permit cost (with a standing inspection), earthquake straps $225, drain pan $75, gas sediment trap $225, and a single-wall to double-wall venting upgrade $250 to $450. A second-level or indoor installation carries a $249 surcharge.

Smith and Rinnai both give 90 days), so we go over the exact terms and the registration step before the work starts.

Tiers are as each manufacturer publishes them for its residential tank lines; the tier is fixed by the model number at purchase, and the standard tier is what we install at book price. The labor column is each manufacturer’s own coverage and is separate from our 1-year labor warranty, which applies whichever brand you choose.
